Frequently Asked Questions

View all โ†’
Why can cost per bitcoin and electricity price be negative?+

A negative value does not mean mining is free โ€” it means the company reports on a net basis: subsidies, demand response revenue, curtailment compensation, or power resale revenue can exceed actual electricity cost in a period, making the net electricity price or energy cost per bitcoin go below zero.

What is the difference between energy cost per bitcoin and cash cost per bitcoin?+

Energy cost per bitcoin covers electricity / energy only. Cash cost per bitcoin is broader: site operations, hosting fees, maintenance, mining pool fees, on-site labor, insurance, and other direct cash outflows. Cash cost is typically higher.

What does average operating hashrate mean? Why is it preferred for comparison?+

Average operating hashrate is the hashrate that actually runs and produces BTC over a period. It differs from deployed / installed hashrate โ€” those do not guarantee full-quarter uptime. Since BTC production and electricity consumption come from actual operations, average operating hashrate aligns best for cross-company comparison.

Why may the same metric differ across data websites?+

Disclosure has multiple methodologies; common differences:

  1. Quarter basis: calendar vs fiscal
  2. Hashrate methodology: average operating vs period-end vs deployed
  3. Cost methodology: electricity-only vs electricity + hosting vs disclosed "average mining cost"
  4. Power credits: subsidies / curtailment / resale revenue may or may not be deducted
  5. Non-cash items: depreciation / impairment / SBC / BTC fair value changes
  6. Source priority: filings vs monthly production updates vs investor decks

Different numbers usually mean different methodology, not an error.

Why can methodology differ across years for the same company / metric?+

Business structure and disclosure practices evolve:

  1. Business model: hosted โ†” self-mining / cloud / data center
  2. Mining assets: M&A, JVs, relocations, expansions, shutdowns
  3. Disclosure habits: one year average operating hashrate, another deployed only
  4. Cost classification: electricity / hosting / maintenance / depreciation presentation
  5. Industry environment: halvings, power restrictions, accounting standards
  6. Restatements: annual reports or later quarters revising earlier metrics

We track both the number and its source / methodology.
